What To Do: Memphis

My eight week roadtrip through the big US-of-A brought me to the blues capital of the world, Memphis, Tennessee. I loved this city so much that I would say it now holds a place in my top 5 cities of America, and would happily go back again and again to visit! Memphis holds such colourful and deep history, from blues legends, to presidential assassinations, and even the King of Rock N Roll – there’s a little something for everybody.

Explore Beale Street

The real heart and soul of the city, Beale Street is where you will find all the action any time day or night. You will find all kinds of bars hosting a whole range of music, from piano to jazz to blues to funk to rock n roll, everything is taken care of. Beale Street is super vibrant, colourful, and loud – a great place to grab a drink, people watch, meet the locals, and listen to some incredibly talented musicians. You can also experience bars where some of the greats first began – I’m talking B.B. King!

Catch a minor league baseball game

The vibe of a Memphis Redbirds game was a whole different level to the LA Dodgers game I went to – the crowd was wild! It is a great atmosphere for a night or afternoon out with cheap beer and hotdogs, and you can pick up tickets at the gate for under $15!

See the famous Ducks of the Peabody Hotel

It all started out as a silly thing – have real ducks floating in the hotel water feature – which has now made the beautiful Peabody Hotel a huge name. Every morning and evening you can watch the ducks walk to/from the water feature. Make sure you get in early as it is a very popular affair!

Jump back in time

A lot of famous people have walked the streets of Memphis, but Martin Luther King was also assassinated here. See where it all happened and immerse yourself in the intense American history.

See where some music greats started their careers

Johnny Cash, Elvis, Carl Perksin, Joy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis… They all began in this tiny little studio! You can do a tour of Sun Studios and hear their musical history and interactions with some of the biggest names in music history, and even stand where Elvis stood! There are plenty of things to see, tales to hear, and it just keeps in line with the vibe of Memphis!

Walk the halls of Graceland

Because you cannot visit Memphis without paying homage to the King of Rock N Roll. Elvis’ house is incredible and definitely something worth seeing! Learn about his life and career, and even see his grave.

Have you ever traveled to Memphis? What are some of your favourite things to get up to?
